Born in Little Saxham on 15th February 1885 (1st qtr Thingoe 4a:707) son of George and Frances Mary FORD (née GARWOOD).

1891 census...Aged 6, He was at 54 Whiting Street, Bury St.Edmunds with his father George FORD [50] labourer born in Ripe, Sussex; his mother Frances M [32] born Lttle Saxham; brothers George H [10] and Percy R [8] born Bury St.Edmunds, Arthur E [4] and Charles L [1] born Little Saxham.

1901 census...Aged 16, he was a student at Kerrison Reform School, Thorndon, Suffolk. At 36 Church Walk, Bury St.Edmunds were his parents (father now recorded as Army pensioner); brothers Percy (labourer), Arthur, Charles, Sidney [9] and Herbert [5] both born Bury St.Edmunds.

He and brother Percy had many scrapes with the law, involving several terms of hard labour for stealing, poaching and assault, even up to 11 months sentence in 1906.

1911 census...Aged 27, a house painter, he was lodging at 21 Union Street, Loughborough with Alethea BOUTTELL [50] born Great Barton, Suffolk. At Lambert Place, Bury St.Edmunds were his parents; brothers Arthur, Charles and Sidney (labourers) and Herbert. his mother had lost one of her 7 children (Percy had died in 1909). Five sons were to die in the war, Arthur, Sidney, Herbert George and William.

His dependant was Mrs Althea BOUTTELL, his unmarried wife, of 63 Ashby Road, Loughborough. On discharge from the Army he became a painter at an Electrical Engineering Works.

He enlisted in Bury St.Edmunds. Dying from Tuberculosis at 63 Ashby Road, Loughbrough, and in the absence of his Army records, it is impossible get him recognised by CWGC unless documentation can be found regarding the reasons for his discharge. He was at one time in hospital in Blackpool.




William Ford is buried in Loughborough (Charnwood) Cemetery 47/313
and commemorated in the former St Peter's Church and on the carillon and the town war memorial in Loughborough He has not been found on the CWGC list, and without a service record documenting the reason for his discharge, there is no way to rectfy this.
