1891 census...Aged 6, he was at the Suffolk Regiment Depot in Bury St Edmunds with his father Lt Arthur JAMES [41] born Havering, Essex;his mother Hannah Caroline [32]; brother William [8]; sisters Agnes Anne [4], Olive Mary [2] and Ethel Grace [11 months]. All except his father were born in Bury St.Edmunds 1901 census...Aged 16, he was at Nottingham House, Cambridge Road, Ely with his parents (father now Captain); brother Thomas Spencer [9] born Ely; sisters Agnes Anne, Olive Mary, Ethel Grace and Eleanor Margaret [7] born Ely. 1911 census...Aged 26, a civil service clerk, he was at "Newbury" Quadrant Road, Thornton Heath, Croydon with his parents;sisters Agnes (school clerk), Olive (lithographic student), Ethel (shorthand typist), and Eleanor (civil service student); brother Thomas (insurance clerk), widowed grandmother Mahala COOTE [79]. Brother Thomas (a resident in Croydon) died of wounds on 8th May 1915. |
He enlisted in Bury St.Edmunds. On 8th August 1916 :- 2 am Hostile fire becomes very intense and enemy assaulted RATION TRENCH unsuccessfully 5 am attack resumed and about 70 yards of RATION TRENCH captured by the enemy at NE end 6:30 am Situation became quiet. Arrangements had been made for A Coy and one squad of HQ Grenadiers to attack hostile trenches and strong points between R.33.a.7.6. and R.33.d.9.7. vide pt211. 9:30 pm it was discovered that Stoke TM which were to counter hostile MG and form a barrage had not registered owing to not receiving Bde Orders Attack was therefore cancelled. click here to go to the Commonwealth War Graves Commission website for full cemetery/memorial details |
