Born in 1898 (2nd qtr Bury St.Edmunds 4a:820) son of Isaac and Emily KNIGHTS(née AUSTEN). His mother seems to have died around the time of his birth.

1901 census...Aged 3 he was at 79 Eastgate Street, Bury St,Edmunds with his uncle Harry WOOLNOUGH [33] blacksmith born Stowmarket and aunt Kate (née KNIGHTS) 1911 census...Aged 13, he was at 37 Cressing Road, Braintree with his uncle and aunt WOOLNOUGH. He enlisted in Warley, Essex.
