All the children were born in East Barnet. 1891 census... Aged 12, he was at Verulam Lodge, Chipping Barnet with his parents; sisters Mabel and Ethel; brother Herbert (electrician), Bertram, Horace and Arthur R [9]. 1901 census...Aged 21, a shop assistant (drapery) he was at Verulam, Station Road, Barnet Vale with his widower father (drapery traveller); sister Ethel; brother Bertram (shop assistant, drapery), Horace (druggist assistant), Arthur R (surveyor's clerk). 1911 census...Aged 31, a warehouseman, dress trade, he was head of house at Verulam Lodge, Station Road, New Barnet; 2 servants and a visitor, Mary WALKER [29] born Downham, Norfolk. He married Mary WALKER [10-12-1881] in Kensington on 12th August 1911, later of 26 Westerham Road, Leytonstone. Their two children were Kathleen Mary [36-6-1912] and Arthur William [27-12-1914].They lost Joan Elizabeth (1916-1916) In 1914 they were living at The Firs, Epping New Road, Buckhurst Hill. |
He enlisted at Warley On 12th October 1917 the 4th Suffolks were at Railway Dugouts, near Ypres.It was bad weather , working parties as usual, 1 OR killed (Harold), 1 wounded.
