Born in 1897 (1st qtr Bury St.Edmunds 4a:831) son of Simon and Sarah (née COPPING)

1901 census...Aged 4, he was at 40 Long Brackland, Bury St.Edmunds with his father Simon MIDDLEDITCH [35] labourer; his mother Sarah [33]; brother Harry (Ernest Harry) [13] sisters Gertrude [12], Violet [10], May [8], Ethel [5] and Florence [2]. All were born in Bury St.Edmunds (some records have his mother born in Woolpit)

1911 census...Aged 14, a paper boy he was at 7 Klondyke, Bury St.Edmunds with his parents; brothers Harry (Ernest) timber yard labourer, Felix [7] and George ALLEN [19 months] (son of sister Gertrude); sisters Violet, May and Florry

He enlisted in At the time the 2nd RoyalFusiliers were heavily involved near Vieux Berquin, being pushed steadily back by the German Spring Offensive, the Kaiserschlacht, which had started on 21st March and which had yet to run out of steam. War Diaries at this time were usually very extensive and detailed about the withdrawals, or very sparse due to circumstances. In this case the complete story is swamped by detail and since we do not know which day was George's last, the area is all we can be sure of.
