Ernest was born on 27th February 1901 (2nd qtr 1901 Bury St.Edmunds 4a:891) son of Clement James and Charlotte Mary Ann PETTIT (née SMITH)

1901 census...Aged 1 month, he was at 21 Mustow Street, Bury St.Edmunds with his father Clement PETTIT [34] coach builder; his mother Charlotte [31]; brothers Cornelius C [9],Thomas H [3] and Sidney C [2]; sister Dorothy G [8]. All were born in Bury St.Edmunds.

1911 census...Aged 10, he was still at 21 Mustow Street with his parents, brothers Cornelius Clement, Thomas Henry, Sidney Charles and Frank Arthur [8], sister Dorothy Grace.

In 1923, in Bury St.Edmunds, he married Ivy E BLASBY [23-12-1903]

Their children were Joan Eveleyn [11-11-1925, Doris J [14-9-1928], Pamela Vera [18-8-1934]. In 1939 they were all at 5 Holderness Road, Bury St.Edmunds with Ivy's brother Samuel BLASBY. Ernest was a maintenance electrician.


On 27th February a bombing raid, seemingly targeting the sugar beet factory, resulted in houses in Holderness Road being hit. In Number 5 were the Pettit family and Edward and two young daughters were killed. These were the only deaths caused directly by enemy action in Bury St.Edmunds during WW2.
No details have been found regarding Ivy and her other daughter, Doris.


Ernest is buried in Bury St.Edmunds Cemetery compartment 2 NEG grave 60 (with his wife)
Joan and Pamela are buried in compartment 2 NEG grave 60 (with their sister Doris)
