Born in 1892 (4th qtr Bury St.Edmunds 4a:699) son of George John and Annie Catherine ROPER (née HARRINGTON)

1901 census...Aged 8, he was at 12 Mustow Street, Bury St.Edmunds with his father George J ROPER [48] brass/iron moulder; his mother Annie C [48] born Halstead; his brothers Louis J [19] iron moulder, Sidney K [18] engine turner's latheman, Pery C [16]sheet iron worker, Frederick J [13] errand boy, Reginald W [11], Laurence A [9], and Edmund E [7]. All except his mother were born in Bury St.Edmunds.

1911 census...Aged 18, boot repairer's assistant, he was still at 12 Mustow Street with his parents and brothers Laurence Arthur (glove cleaner's assistant), and Edmund Ernest (blacksmith's striker)


He enlisted in Bury St.Edmunds on 28th May 1915 in Suffolk Regiment, No.20249, and was discharged with bronchitis on 1st September 1916 .

He gave his age as 22 years 9 months, a boot repairer, resident at 12 Mustow Street, Bury St.Edmunds, single, 5 feet 6.5 inches tall, chest 29 to 32 inches, weighing 121 lbs, Church of England, next of kin, mother, Annie ROPER.
Posted to 3rd (Home Service)battalion then posted to 2nd Garrison Bn on 17th May 1916. No overseas service. His illness started in 1913 before enlistment and was not the result of nor aggravated by military service, hence not on CWGC records. It is assumed he served with the Red Cross VAD not the St John's Ambulance.
