Born in 1889 (3rd qtr Bury St.Edmunds 4a:689) son of Edward and Eliza SHEPHERD (née PAYNTER)

1891 census...Aged 2, he was at 35 Whiting Street, Bury St.Edmunds with his father Edward SHEPHERD, [37] cabinet maker; his mother Eliza [24] born Bermuda, West Indies; his brother Edward [7] born Bermuda; sisters Nettie [4] and baby (Margaret) [1 day] both born Bury St.Edmunds.

1901 census...Aged 12 he was at Lucern Cottages, Mill Lane, Bury St.Edmunds with his parents, brother Edward (iron moulder); sisters Janet [13], Margaret [10], Clara [8] ,Agnes [6] and Edith [1]; uncle Harry SHEPHERD [40] draper's porter and aunt Agnes SHEPHERD [42]. All except his mother and brother Edward were born in Bury St.Edmunds.

1911 census...Aged 22, single, he was Lance Corporal in the 1st Battalion, King's Own (Royal Lancaster) Regiment in Havelock Barracks, Lucknow, India. The fact that he was actually married with a child has escaped attention. His wife Ethel and daughter Annie were at 29 Risbygate Street, Bury St.Edmunds.

He married Netheravon born Ethel Allman PHILLIMORE [7-6-1887] in Bury St.Edmunds in 1909. They had 2 children, Annie Mabel Ethel [19-9-1909] and Iris Madge Phyllis [3-4-1914] at Risbygate Street, Bury St.Edmunds.
His widow re-married on 23th November 1916 to Lance Corporal George D.SMITH 9071 Suffolk Regiment in Felixstowe.



He enlisted in Bury St.Edmunds. The War Diary simply says the battalion were in the line at le Touquet (near Armentieres) from the cross roads to the railway.
