Born Albert Edward SNAZEL in 1886 (3rd qtr Bury St.Edmunds 4a:694) son of Arthur and Hannah SNAZELL (née DUELL)

1891 census...Aged 5, Bertie Snazel, he was at 5 Long Brackland, Bury St.Edmunds with his father Arthur SNAZEL [42]bricklayer, his mother Hannah [41]; Alfred brothers Alfred [18] a gardener, William [17] butcher's assistant, Arthur [15] errand boy and Herbert [10]; sisters Ruth [12] and Lily [7].All were born in Bury St.Edmunds.

1901 census...Aged 14, Bert Edw SNAZELL, labourer in foundry, he was still at 5 Long Brackland with his parents; brothers Alfred (iron fitter) and Herbert (bricklayer); sisters Lily and Florence [10].

He married Bella BRABROOK in Bury St.Edmunds in 1908

1911 census...Aged 24, a labourer, he was at 18 Tayfen Road, Bury St.Edmunds with his wife Bella [23] and their son Edward [11 months]

His brother Herbert died after discharge in 1918 see here


He enlisted in Bury St.Edmunds.

On 22nd October 1914 the battalion were at Rue de Marais.he war diary :-
2:30 am Heavy firing heard from direction of LORGNIES
A Coy report position of trenches very exposed and untenable by day. Orders sent to A Coy that trenches must be occupied. Difficulties of A Coy reported to 13 Bde
5:50 am Enemy attacked VIOLAINES and carried CHESHIRES trenches, cheering loudly.
Reserve platoon placed in position astride RUE DU MARAIS -VIOLAINES and one machine gun placed south of road..Efforts were made to collect men of various units who were coming back through RUE DU MARAIS
One machine gun had been sent forward under Lt CH WOODHOUSE before daylight to find a position to sweep road running north and south through VIOLAINES. Lt Woodhouse was unable to reach position before German attack succeeded and was last seen firing his revolver. The gun and tripod was lost
6:45 a, Enemy brought machine gun to north end of VIOLAINES and enfiladed trenches held by composite company, rendering them untenable. One platoon of A Coy under 2/Lt GS Shannon remained in its position till dusk gaining touch with KOSB on its left.
From reports received it appeared that retirement of CHESHIRES when trenches were rush masked fire of Dorset Coy who were digging. Reserve platoon under CSM HOLLOWAY maintained its ground at Rue du Marais
7am to 11 am A second position was gradually taken up at LA QUINQUE RUE behind which men were collected.A Coy and machine gun were then placed in position along main road just south of QUIN of LA QUINQUE RUE where men of CHESHIRES, BEDFORDS and part of Composite Coy DORDSETS had been collected, the MANCHESTE%RS having come up to RUE DU MARAIS. Remainder of day quiet. German advance checked.
8 pm Battn withdrawn to FESTUBERT
