Born on 17th May 1894 (3rd qtr Bury St.Edmunds 4a:739) son of Frederick and Emma Mary STEGGLES (née CHENERY)

1901 census...Aged 6, he was at 1 York Road, Bury St.Edmunds with his father Frederick STEGGLES [48] carpenter/joiner; his mother Emma M[48]; brother Rupert F [18] apprentice carpenter. All were born in Bury St.Edmunds

1911 census...Aged 16, apprentice at cycle works, he was still at 1 York Road with his parents.


He attested in Bury St.Edmunds on 28th February 1916, giving his date of birth as 17th May 1894, a fitter from 1 York Road, Bury St.Edmunds. He was mobilised on 12th April 1916 in the 3/1 Suffolk Yeomanry(No.2624) He was 5 feet 7.5 inches tall, chest 35 to 37 inches, weighing 147 lbs, next of kin his father Frederick.
Posted to BEF via Folkestone - Boulogne on 27th August 1916 posted to 4th Suffolks.Transferred to 4th FReserve Bn R West Kent and then on 7th September to 7th Battalion, R West Kents N0.G/18124.
Army Form 5080 has living relatives in 1919 as parents at 1 York Road, Bury St.Edmunds, brother Ruoert [36] married soldier serving in Egypt and married sister May Sutton [38] of 14 Crown Street, Stowmarket.

He died in No.13 General Hospital, Boulogne
