"BALSHAM WAR MEMORIAL"

To the eternal memory of the men of BALSHAM who died in the service of their country
Twenty eight in the Great War of 1914-1919 and nine in 1939-145 and one Boer War

The war memorial is a column in the churchyard of south of Holy Trinity Church

The memorial was constructed in 1919 by Oxford architect F.E.Howard and the World War Two names added in December 1946. There is also a Roll of Honour book in the church. The memorial received grants in 2013 of £846 from English Heritage and £250 from the War Memorial Trust towards cleaning and re-pointing. Then in 2015 a further grant from the War Memorials Trust of £150 towards repairs with lime mortar to prevent water ingress.

The official description from Historic England is:-
War memorial 1919 by F E Howard, architect, Oxford. Clipsham limestone. Gabled cross with crucifixion and Virgin and St John. On south side seated Virgin and Child in mandorla. On tapering chamfered column and base both with brooch stops. Stepped octagonal plinth with inscriptions.
The inscription panel on the bottom step riser reads:-

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old,
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn
At the going down of the sun, and in the morning,
We will remember them.
