BATTEN, Owen

5830007, Private, Owen BATTEN
Aged 21

5th Battalion, Green Howards (Yorkshire Regiment)
Killed in Action on Friday, 31st May 1940

Owen BATTEN was born in 1919 (Risbridge Q2-1919 4A:1162) son of Allan T and Rosa BATTEN (née JOHNSON).

In the 1939 register his widower father Allan T BATTEN [21-5-1888] a blacksmith/agricultural engineer, was at Little Corner, Balsham.

It appears his mother died in Bristol in 1936. His father was from Barnes, Surrey but moved to Swaffham Bulbeck as a blacksmith, before 1911, marrying Rosa JOHNSON in 1911 (Newmarket Q3-1911)

Owen's battalion were part of 150th Brigade, fighting in the defence of Arras and retreating to Dunkirk where they were among the last to leave the beaches. Owen, it seems did not get that far, he and 5 others died on 31st, two buried alongside Owen in Houtem.
