Daniel George HOBART was born in 1917 in Chiswick (Brentford Q2-1917 3A:301) son of John and Laura M. HOBART (née BAGSHAWE).

In the 1939 register at Bull House, Balsham were his parents John [20-9-1875] retired Eastern Telegraphist; Laura M [12-8-1883] and his brother Robert G. [5-8-1908] photo finisher/temp aux fireman and ARP.


The SS "Retriever" was a cable layer, transferred from the West Coast of America Telegraph Company in 1939 to Cable and Wireless and moved to the Mediterranean in 1940. On April 12th, 1941, she was en route from Lemnos to Piraeus, when she was seen by German bombers, off Phelera. Junkers Ju 88 aircraft of III Staffeln, Lehrgeschwader 1, Luftwaffe. She was dive-bombed and sunk. 11 of the crew of 46 were killed.
