John White was born in Chevington on 4th July 1891 (3rd qtr 1891 Thingoe 4a:728) son of John and Alice Fanny Marita WHITE (née
HANCOCKS)
1901 census...Aged 9, he was at Battlies House, Rougham with his father John WHITE [43] estate agent born Chevington; his mother Alice [40] born South Africa; sister Mabel [11] born Chevington and brother Alexander [2] born Rougham 1911 census...Aged 19 he was a 2nd Lieutenant in the Army Service Corps at Barrosa Barracks, Aldershot. His father was at Welnetham Hall. His mother was away visiting her sister. |
He enlisted in Bury St.Edmunds. He was 5 feet 11 inches tall, father John White of Welnetham Hall, nr Bury St.Edmunds. He served in UK from
24th May 1913 to 24th July 1913, then wnet to Mauritius until 6th December 1913 and thence to India until 23rd December 1914. Moving back to
UK the battalion were training in Warwick for France, when they were ordered to Gallipoli, arriving there on 25th April 1915
The war diary for 4th June has not been found, but there was some sort of action that day as 47 of the battalion were killed
