All except his mother were born in Whepstead. 1911 census...Aged 16, a farm labourer, he was at Queen's Hill Cottages, Chedburgh with his parents, brothers Algernon and David; sisters Emily and Lily [4] born Rede. Battalion war diary has :- 22nd, Lieut E Clayton left Battn to join R.F.A. Reinforcements 5 O.R. Ptes J Godfrey 27074, D Wells 1541 killed 3 OR wounded. Relieved by 14th H.L.I. Battn returned to Noeux les Mines.
