Arthur Nathan Hubbard was born in Fakenham (Thetford Q3-1898 4B:360), son of Frederick and Sabina HUBBARD (née GRIMWOOD). Frederick had been married
before, to Sarah KEMP who died in 1885
1901 census...Aged 2, he was at The Street, Fakenham Magna with his father Frederick HUBBARD [47] farm labourer born Blo Norton; his mother Sabina [41] born Troston; step brother Frederick [25] farm labourer born Euston; half brothers Frank [10] George [2] and Herbert [3 weeks] all born in Fakenham; step sister Harriett [17] born Euston and half sister Ada [6] born Fakenham and half brother James GRIMWOOD (entered as HUBBARD). 1911 census...Aged 12, he was at Fakenham with his parents, half brother James, brothers George, farm labourer and Herbert. He enlisted in Bury St.Edmunds.
The battalion were in the line at Gonnelieu. On the 25th they had made a raid and brought back a machine gun and 5 prisoners. The 26th was recorded as quiet. Appendix "A" in the War Diary at that time gives:- On the night of the 25th September we raided the enemy trenches in R.38.d after heavy artillery bombardment. The enemy saw our party forming up in No Mans Land and his barrage came down minutes before ours, causing considerable casualties. Our raiding party advanced and was followed across by the enemy barrage. They however reached their objective and besides killing many in the trenches, bombed several dug-outs, blowing up the entrances of those from which the enemy refused to come out. Out of a total of 8 officers and 236 OR our casualties were 1 officer, Capt MEH SCHIFF, Wounded and missing 4 officers and 92 OR.
