"HOCKWOLD cum WILTON WAR MEMORIAL"

To the eternal memory of the men of HOCKWOLD cum WILTON who died in the service of their country
Twenty three in the Great War of 1914-1919 and three in 1939-1945



Hockwold has the traditional war memorial, a blue-grey polished marble obelisk on a three stepped square plinth on a square base before the church entrance. The inscription and names are incised and gilded. So far the history of the monument has not been found

On the North face, nearest the church, the obelisk has a wreath encircling the dates
1914-1919
on the upper panel the inscription
THIS MONUMENT
IS ERECTED
IN GRATEFUL MEMORY OF
THE MEN OF THIS PARISH
WHO SERVED
IN HIS MAJESTY'S FORCES
AND DIED
IN THE GREAT WAR
and on the centre panel
"THEY LOVED NOT THEIR LIFE
EVEN UNTO DEATH"

On the East face -upper- are the first name, other initial and surname, in surname order, of 11 men (Arnold to Harrod) who fell in the Great War
on the West face- upper- are the first name, other initial and surname, in surname order, of 11 men (Hicks to Vincent) who fell in the Great War
on the South face on the upper panel is a wreath encircling the dates 1939-1945 and above that the name of Walter Arnold who was actually a victim of the Great War. On the centre panel are the names of the three who fell in 19139-1945
