G/19185, Private, Harry Edward NEALE
Aged 19
Born in Exning in Q2-1899 to Percy Walter and Sarah Elizabeth NEALE (née BOWMAN) of Enjoyable Cottage, Oxford Street, Exning.
1901 census...Harry Edward [2] was at Enjoyable Cottage, Oxford Street, Exning, with his father Percy Walter [29] a groom, and his mother Sarah [25]. They were all Exning born. 1911 census...Harry [11] was now at 17 Bakers Row, Exning Road, Newmarket with his parents and two brothers Percy [9] and Sidney [6], both born in Newmarket. |
He enlisted in Newmarket. The 9th Royal Sussex, having taken part in the Battle for Avre early in April, were "resting" between
engagements. Harry's death on the 20th May was the only one for the 9th battalion that week. He may have been attached
to another battalion though, but few Sussex Regiment men fell at that time anywhere. The German Spring offensive had been halted
at Avre, before they could reach Amiens and from now on it was all downhill for the enemy. |
