1529, Private, Frank Bertie R STACEY
Aged 19

1st/5th Battalion, Suffolk Regiment
Died of his Wounds on Friday 3rd September 1915

Born in Isleham in Q4-1895 [Newmarket 3b:511], middle of three sons of William Charles and Anne Elizabeth STACEY (née WEBBER), of Andrew's Yard, Newmarket.

1901 census...Frank [5] was in Andrews Yard, Wellington Street with his father William [37] a painter born Pimlico, London, his mother Ann [37] born Isleham, brother Maurice [9] born Exning and sister Eveleyn [1] born Newmarket.

1911 census...Frank [15], a grocer's errand boy, was at 8 Foulden Terrace, Exning Road with his parents, brother Maurice was now an assistant in photography, sister Evelyn and new brother William [7] born Newmarket, and grandmother Elizabeth Stacey [85].

His parents later moved to 4 Bath Terrace, Mill Hill, Newmarket. He enlisted in Newmarket.

On 10th August 1915 the 5th Suffolks, over 1,000 strong, arrived at Suvla Bay, Gallipoli. The end of August, beginning of September, was mundane trench living for the Battalion, but disease was prevalent in Gallipoli and without his actual service record we will never know if Frank was actually injured or died of one of the diseases rampant in that theatre of war. In the eight days previous none of the 1st/5th Battalion had died.

It seems quite likely that Frank Stacey, Fred Challice , John Glyde , and Walter Argent all arrived together to Gallipoli on 10th August 1915. "H" company of the 5th Battalion, Suffolk Regiment consisted 83 Newmarket and 25 Mildenhall men.
