Duncan Frank Wright was born in 1918 (Medway Q3-1918 2A:1169(6), son of Russell and Elsie WRIGHT (née COCKERTON). He may be the Duncan F Wright who married Mary BOYES in 1944

He attended Soham Grammar School from 1932 to 1935. He is named on the Ely Roll of Honour.

In the 1939 register the family were at 9a High Street, Ely, father Russell [31-12-1888] master butcher, shop keeper,provisions merchant, mother Elsie A {14-3-1896] a book keeper assisting husband. There are 4 closed records.

He was one of the two pilots on Horsa glider CN74 in the 3rd wave. 2 Stirling aircraft and 3 Horsa gliders crashed, 1 glider landed, in the grounds of the Chateau de Grangues (between Caen and Deauville). Sgt Pilot Barry Powell was killed in the crash, whilst Staff Sgt Wright was taken prisoner and held with some No.591 Parachute Squadron survivors from Stirling EF295 (J). They were all shot in the early hours of 6th June and buried in a mass grave in Grangues . Initially thought to be 11 unknown RAF men, on 1st June 1945 they were all re buried in Ranville War Cemetery.
