Soham Grammar and Soham College who died in the service of their country



THE GREAT WAR PLAQUE


This plaque was unveiled on 16th November 1921 in Soham Grammar School by Mr E.T.Nethercoat, M.P.S., President of the pharmaceutical Society, a native of Ely and a former pupil at the school. It was dedicated by the Rev.J.C.Rust, Vicar of St Andrew's and Chairman of the Governors of the school.It was moved to Beechurst with the school in 1925.

THE MEMORIAL GATES

The WW2 Memorial Gates in earlier times.
In December 1951 wrought iron gates were erected at the entrance to the playing fields in remembrance of those ex pupils who fell in the 1939-1945 war.They were dedicated on the 18th July 1952 and now stand half way up the old drive from Sand Street. Until 1971 on the Friday before Remembrance Sunday there was always a ceremony of remembrance culminating in the planting of a field of poppies

The gates were dedicated by the Archdeacon of Ely, The Venerable H.F.Kirkpatrick on the 18th July 1952. In the order of service that day the following were listed and it is also noted where their commemoration may be found on this site. There are three other on the Roll of Honour that were not listed at the time.

THE BOOK OF REMEMBRANCE



SOHAM RAILWAY STATION PLAQUE

This plaque was originally mounted in Soham Railway Station but was removed on the demise of those premises to the safe keeping of the Village College. Unveiled on 1st June 1947, by the Lord Lieutenant of Cambridgeshire (and Isle of Ely).

The brass plaque is mounted above a case holding the George Cross, London and North Eastern Railways medal and the Order of Industrial Heroism Medal awarded to James Nightall.

The plate is engraved, below the insignia of the London and North Eastern Railway, with :-

THIS TABLET COMMEMORATES THE HEROIC ACTION
OF FIREMAN J.W.NIGHTALLG.C., WHO LOST HIS
LIFE & DRIVER B.BIMBERT G.C. WHO WAS BADLY
INJURED WHILST DETACHING A BLAZING WAGON
FROM AN AUMMUNITION TRAIN AT THIS STATION
AT 1.43 AM ON JUNE 2ND 1944. THE STATION
WAS TOTALLY DESTROYED AND CONSIDERABLE
DAMAGE DONE BY THE EXPLOASION. THE DEVOTION
TO DUTY OF THESE BRAVE MEN SAVED THE
TOWN OF SOHAM FROM GRAVE DESTRUCTION
SIGNALMAN F.BRIDGES WAS KILLED WHILST ON
DUTY & GUARD H.CLARKE SUFFERED FROM SHOCK
"BE STRONG AND QUIT YOURSELVES LIKE MEN."
