Ernest Edward STEWARD was born in Thurston on 8th October 1880 (Stow Q4-1880 4A:599), baptised at St. Peter's, Thurston, on 12th December 1880, son of James and Sarah STEWARD (née THEOBALD)

1881 census...Aged 10 months, he was at The Railway Station, Thurston, with his father James STEWARD [32] railway porter, born Walsham le Willows; his mother Sarah [36], born Layer de la Haye; sisters Ada Mary [8] and Florence [4] (both born Walsham le Willows); brother James Walter [6] born Walsham le Willows. There was one railwayman lodger.

1891 census...Aged 10, he was Railway Cottages, Thurston with his parents, and twins, sister Ethel Clara[8] and brother Christopher Charles [8] born Thurston. Two lodgers

He enlisted on 16th August 1898 in Thurston and died of illness in Potchefstroom, South Africa. His trade was officer's indoor servant


There was no Commonwealth War Graves Commission in those days, in fact it is unlikely that the graves were marked or survive.

Ernest Steward is also commemorated on the Boer War memorial at Cornhill, Bury St.Edmunds
