Sydney Victor NEWSON was born in 1916 (Bury St Edmunds Q3-1916 4A:1713) mother's maiden name ARCHER. CWGC have his parents as Henry George and Mary Caroline NEWSON but the marriage registers has Henry George marrying Mary Caroline MILLS in 1905 so there is doubt as to identification

His father died in Q2-1939

In 1942 he married Eileen Annie DADE.

In the 1939 Register is no help.


The 5th (Huntingdonshire) Battalion, Northamptonshire Regiment were part of 1st Army during the campaign in Tunisia. The war diary has not yet been found. Souk-el-Khemis is in northern Tunisia, and was the site, after its capture of a temporary airfield used by the RAF and then the USAF.



He was originally buried in Souk-el-Khemis Military Cemetery but moved to Mejez-el-Bab on 10th July 1944
