"TROSTON WAR MEMORIAL"

To the eternal memory of the men of TROSTON who died in the service of their country
Six in the Great War of 1914-1919 and One in 1939-1945



Troston has no traditional war memorial on the village green, but has two plaques at the church of St Mary. A wooden plaque in the church porch is painted with the names of all those served in the Great War with the casualties marked. Inside the church is a white marble tablet, on a black slate surround.This commemorates the six men who died in the Great War, their forename and surname incised and black painted. Dedicated on 8th May 1920 by Canon F.E.Warren, unveiled by Mr. F.W.Wateridge of Troston Hall and reported in the Bury Free Press on 15th May 1920.

TROSTON - WAR MEMORIAL DEDICATED -
On Saturday afternoon the war memorial subscribed for by the parishioners was dedicated in the parish church. It takes the form of a tablet of white marble, with a background of slate, and is placed on the south wall inside the church. On the marble the following is inscribed "In grateful memory of the men of Troston who gave their lives in the War 1914-1919. Benjamin Balaam, George Balaam, Edward Barker, Frank Reeve, Sidney Rogers, Frederick Shaw "Well done thou good and faithful servants". There was a large congregation and the following clergy were in the procession: Revs R.J.E.Boggis (Norton), Dr W Hatt Lipscomb (Great Barton), W.H.Illingorth (Honington), H.N.G.Hall (rector) and Canon Warren (DD (Bardwell)........Mr.F.W.Wateridge of Troston Hall removed theUnion Jack which veiled the memorial....Canon Warren offered dedicatory prayers....at the conclusion of the service a muffled peal was rung.
