William Rawlings was born in Baythorne End, Birdbrook (Risbridge Q2-1891 4A:375), baptised in St Leonards, Wixoe on 11th October 1891, son of John Robert and Jane RAWLING (née TURNER). They can at times be found as RALLING, RALLINGS or RAWLINGS.

1901 census...Aged 10, William RALLING, he was in Birdbrook with his father Robert RALLING [42] horse keeper born Wixoe; his mother Jane [44] born Ashen; brothers Harry [17] horsekeeper and Edward [16] farm labourer, both born in Wixoe, John [11], Arthur[7] and Oliver [2 months] all born in Baythorne End; sisters Kate [14] born Wixoe, Ethel [6] and Blanche [4] both born in Baythorne End.

1911 census...Aged 20, William RAWLINGS, he was a painter/paper hanger, at Baythorne End with his parents; sister Ada [29] born Wixoe; brothers John (farm labourer), Arthur [railway station clerk) and Oliver (scholar). All ten siblings survive


He enlisted in Haverhill.
192nd Machine Gun Company were part of the 6th Division which at the time were on routine trench duties in the Loos/Lens sector. The Machine Gun Company war diary has not been found so it is impossible to be more accurate here.
