Born Walter Charles on 1st June 1897 in Bury St.Edmunds (2nd qtr 4a:803) son of Walter and Eliza Ellen FROUD (née DUELL)
1901 census...[Walter] Charles, aged 3 was at 65 Raingate Street, Bury St.Edmunds with his father Walter FROUD [34] furnace stoker/fireman; his mother Eliza [33]; brother Walter Bertie [12]; sisters Emma [10] and Florence [5]. All were born in Bury St.Edmund. 1911 census...Aged 13, Charlie, a grocer's errand boy, was at 32 Raingate Street, Bury St.Edmunds with his parents (mother a corset makers); brother Albert Alexander [7]; sisters Florrie (corset maker), Lily Victoria [9] and Gladys Maude [4]. CWGC and pension card have the family at 4 School Hall Street, Bury St.Edmunds Too many Walter Froud, but this is the 4th Battalion man albeit usually "Charles". |

He enlisted in Bury St.Edmunds. 25th September saw the 4th Suffolks moving into position for an attack on 26th, by 11:30 pm they were in position on a line running north from Fitzclarence Farm
