Peter William BARKER was born in 1924 in Ilford, Essex (Tendring Q2-1924 4A:892), son of Charles William and Ethel E. BARKER (née ROBINSON) of later of Maida Hill, London

In the 1939 register, his parents were at 567 Felixstowe Road, Ipswich , father [20-4-1900] a refrigerator engineer and cold storage works manager, mother [29-12-1901]. "Gainsborough Lodge", Bishops Hill, Ipswich is the address on the back of his death registration card.

He was a member of the 3rd Bury St.Edmunds Scout Group (Culford School).


On 16th August 1944 the SS "Empire Lancer (7,000 tons) was sailing unescorted in the Mozambique Channel when she was torpedoed by U-862 (Heinrich Timm). She was en route to UK from Durban via Majunga, Tamatave and Aden, carrying 2,000 tons of copper and 1,000 tons of military supplies. 37 crew and 5 gunners were lost, 34 crew and 3 gunners were landed in Portuguese East Africa ten days later.
