William Henry TRUSCOTT was born on 1884 in Maidenhead (Cookham Q3-1884 2C:413), son of John and Sarah Jane TRUSCOTT (née MOORCOCK).
1891 census...Aged 6, he was at York Lodge, York Road, Bray, Cookham, Berks with his father John TRUSCOTT [44] coal and corn merchant born Oxford; his mother Sarah J [39] born Wokingham; brothers John A [12] and George A [2 months]; sister Florence M[3]. All the children were born in Maidenhead. 1901 census...Aged 16, a commercial clerk, he was still at York Road with his parents; brothers John (corn merchant's manager) and George and sister Florence. 1911 census...Aged 26, a salesman of furnishing fabrics, he was at 2 York Road, with his parents; brother George Abercrombie (clerk for furniture removal) and sister Florence Mary. Brother John had died in 1910 in Maidenhead. His father was now an Alderman in Maidenhead. He enlisted in London when resident in London. Apparently no one claimed his clasp for the 1914 Star, having arrived in France by 11th
November 1914 it is unlikely that he had not qualified.
The war diary has little detail. From the 19th to 23rd the Battalion were in trenches at Carnoy. Mining, Improvements to trenches and parapets, building dug-outs, occupation of advanced listening posts. William was the only one killed in that period.
