Captain, Frank Sidney WAYMAN
Aged 37

attached to 13th Auxiliary Pioneer Battalion, Royal Engineers
Died of illness in Captivity on Thursday, 18th March 1943

Frank Sydney WAYMAN was born on 11th August 1905 in Catford (Lewisham Q3-1905 1D:1200), baptised in St. Alphege, Greenwich on 3rd June 1906, son of Frank and Sarah Ann WAYMAN (née PERKINS), later of Bury St.Edmunds.

1911 census... Aged 5, he was at 59 Elmer Road, Catford, with his father Frank WAYMAN[32] surveyor's assistant born Westminster and his mother Sarah Ann [32], born Greenwich.

Frank is commemorated on the memorial plaque of King Edward VI Grammar School in the Cathedral, but WAYMAN, Captain Frank Sidney, BSc, AMILCE, R.E. was at the East Anglian School spring 1916 – 1917).
In 1928 he was at 25 Northcott Avenue. Wood Green N22.

In the 1939 register at 1 Westgate Street, Bury St.Edmunds were his father Frank [29-7-1878] a surveyor/valuer; his mother Sarah A [29-1-1879] and sister Margaret E [15-6-1916].

Possibly he was the F.S.Wayman who sailed from London on the "Morea" on 10th August 1928, bound for Singapore.

Records show a Frank S WAYMAN marrying Violet G DIX in 1933 in Edmonton. He was accompanied by his wife (not named) when he sailed from London to Singapore on 17th March 1933 on the "Carthage". It appears that on his return to UK in 1937 his wife was recorded as Violet, they were with their daughter 3 yrs old Margaret( they were visiting his parents).

He was accompanied by his wife (Violet Gladys DIX) and 3.5 years old child when leaving London on 24th February 1938 for Singapore on the "Rawalpindi". An Ancestry record gives Violet as dying in Singapore in 1939, but no source given. He married Kathleen Miriam (?). of 19 St. Andrews Road, Caversham, Reading, Berkshire. His marriage details have not been found, possibly he married in Singapore. This will require a copy of the certificate if possible. His will gives his widow as Kathleen Miriam WAYMAN

The Straits Settlements Volunteer Force (SSVF) was a military reserve force in the Straits Settlements, while they were under British rule. Frank worked for Malayan Public Works Department and was attached to the 13th Pioneer Battalion, Indian Engineers.
The majority of the personnel were from Singapore and were captured at the surrender of Singapore to the Japanese on 15th February 1942. He was shipped to Taiwan on 16th August 1942 and died of beriberi when working in Tokyo No.1 Dispatched camp (Mitsubishi Dock, Yokohama).
