Donald Henry WHITING was born in 1916 (Bury St Edmunds Q3-1916 4A:1708), son of Edgar H and Dora H WHITING (née BURTON).

In the 1939 register at 34 Chalk Road, Bury St Edmunds were his father Edgar H [26-10-1889] house decorator/ARP demolition and rescue, and his mother Dora H [16-7-1891].

He was Cricket Captain of Culford School in 1933 and 1934.


On 13th August 1942, Avro Lancaster MkI ser.no.R5633, sqn id. EM-R took off at 22:42 from RAF Bottesford (near Grantham) on a mission to Mainz and failed to return.

The crew was :-

Flight Engineer - Sgt Adam Innes STEEL (RAF)
Air Observer - Sgt Bernard Anthony BROPHY (RCAF)
W/Op/Air Gunner - Sgt Donald Henry WHITING (RAFVR)

W/Op/Air Gunner - Sgt Walter Page Laing WOOD (RAF)
Air Gunner - Sgt J PRESTON (RAF)

Initially they were all buried in Wiesbaden Sud Friedhof before being moved on 24th September 1947 to Durnbach
