Eric William Blacker was born in Euston (Thetford Q4-1898 4B:353), son of Edward William and Mary Ann BLACKER (née WIGNELL).

1901 census...Aged 2, he was at Park House, Euston with his father Edward W. BLACKER [32] gamekeeper born Euston; his mother Mary A [40] born Caldecote, Rutland; sisters Winifred M [9], Florence A [7] and Eleanor A [4]; brothers Charles E [6] and Herbert A [1]. All the children were born at Euston Park.

1911 census...Aged 12, he was at Park House, Euston with his parents; sisters Winifred Mary, Florence Ann, Eleanor Alice and Marjorie [7] born Euston; brothers Charles Edward and Herbert Alan

CWGC have his mother at Barnham, Norfolk, as does the pension card


He enlisted in Andover, Hants, whilst resident at Whitchurch.

The 1st/5th Devonshires spent most of the war in India or Egypt, only arriving in Europe in June 1918 and were the only Territorial formation to enter Germany.

"A" & "C" Coys relieved by 2/20th Londons during the night and went into CITY SUPPORT trenches west of Canal du Nord. "D" Coy moved up into CITY TRENCH and KNAT AVENUE. 'B' Coy still in CITY SUPPORT TRENCH. Casualties Killed 9. O.R. Wounded 2 officers 33 O R."


As usual the numbers differ from CWGC but they will have been able to sort out the missing who never came back. CWGC puts the number killed at 14 that day.
