George Frederick Lilley was born in 1889 in Fornham All Saints (Thingoe Q1-188 4A:699), baptised in All Saints, Fornham All Saints on 7th April 1889, son of
William and Anna LILLEY (née GRAINGER).
1891 census...Aged 2,he was at Frost's Court, FornhamAll Saints with his father William LILLEY [28] farm labourer; his mother Anna [29]; brother William [3] and sister Edith [5 months]. All were born in Fornham All Saints. 1901 census...Aged 12, a farm labourer, he was at 11 Bridge Road, Fornham All Saints with his parents; brothers William (farm labourer), Cecil [6] and Reginald [4] and sister Dorothy [1]. The new siblings were born in Fornham All Saints. 1911 census...Aged 22 a farm labourer, he was at Fornham All Saints with his parents, brothers William, Cecil and Reginald (all farm labourers) and sister Edith [8] born Fornham All Saints. One of the 7 siblings had died (the first Edith). Sister Dorothy was visiting Elizabeth HOWES in Fornham All Saints |

He enlisted in Fornham All Saints.
On the 10th October 1916 the battalion were in the Longueval area. War Diary:- 10-10-16 - In Trenches- Draft of 16 OR arrived and taken on strength. Casualties 7 O.R.killed. 16 wounded. Only 2 of those killed have an identified grave. The Bury Free Press of 11th November 1916 reported:- FORNHAM ALL SAINTS SOLDIER FALLS IN THE FRAY Much sympathy is felt in this village for Mr.and Mrs. W.Lilley, who have recently received the sad news of the death of their second son, Corpl G.F. (Sammy) Lilley, of the 9th Suffolk Regiment. The deceased solider, who was killed in action on October 10th 1916, was 27 years of age. he is the second hero of this small village to forfeit his life for his country. Deceased was one of six Fornham lads to volunteer for service in September 1914. Mrs.Lilley has three other sons serving in the Army. The eldest, Prv W.Lilley is in the same regiment as his brother, Prvt C Lilley, of the 1/5th Suffolks. He was invalided home from the Dardanelles. Prvt R.J. Lilley is in the Army Veterinary Corps and is now undergoing military training at home.Next week we hope to reproduce the photo of the brave lad who lost his ife.
