Ronald Charles George Rayner was born on 21st October 1924 in Fornham All Saints (Bury St Edmunds Q4-1924 4A:1429), son of Frederick Percy and Anna Rachel RAYNER (née COOMBS). He appears to have had 2 sisters (Betty C [1924] and Ruth R [1929] and 2 brothers, Lawrence F (1920-2004) and Cyril John (1940-1998).

In the 1939 register, Ronald was a domestic gardener living at 6 Council Houses, with his father Frederick P. [29-8-1897] a shepherd; his mother Anna R [1-7-1897]; brother Laurence F [1-4-1920] labourer in timber yard; sister Betty C [4-2-1927] later Mrs LARTER.
