Ian Drummond Claughton was born in Fornham St.Martin on 4th October 1890(Thingoe Q4-1890 4A:637) baptised in Fornham St Martin on 16th November 1890, son of Henry William and Emily Margaret Wilma CLAUGHTON (née KEIGHTLEY).

1891 census...Aged 7 months, he was at Fornham Villa, Fornham St Martin with his father Henry W CLAUGHTON [39] HM Inspector of Schools born Elton, Hunts; his mother Emily M W [36] born Crieff, Scotland; brother Alastair H [9] born Fornham St. Martin.

1901 census...Aged 10, he was at The Villa, Fornham St.Martin with his parents.

He started school at Repton September 1904

1911 census...Aged 20, a student at King's College, Cambridge, he was at The Villa, Fornham St.Martin.

There was another brother, Neil Piers Campbell born and died in 1889. His brother Alastair died at home in 1919.


His entry in Du Ruvigny's Roll of Honour is:-
CLAUGHTON, IAN DRUMMOND, Lieut.,11th (Service) Battn.(Cambridgshire) The Suffolk Regt., 3rd s of Henry William Claughton, of University College, Oxford, and Fornham St.Martin, Bury St.Edmunds, co.Suffolk. H.M.Inspector of Schools (1875-1913) by his wife, Emily, dau.,of Capt. R.H.H.Keightley, 7th Royal Fusiliers: and godson of Bishop Piers Claughton, Archdeacon of London and Chaplain-General of the Forces: b. Fornham St.Martin 4 Oct.1890:educ.Repton School and King's College, Cambridge (B.A.1912). He obtained all school prizes at Repton for English Literature, History etc and at King's College, Cambridge an Exhibition for History etc. On taking his degree in the Historical Tripos, the College granted him a further Exhibition for Research work: he possessed great ability and was very widely read. He was gazetted shortly after the outbreak of war a 2nd Lieut in the 11th Cambridgeshire Battalion Suffolk Regt 9 Sept.1914: promoted Lieut. June 1915: went to France early in Jan. 1916: killed in action 2 March 1916 near Bois Grenier, buried there. His Colonel wrote:"He was absolutely fearless and died a noble death." Unm.


The war diary for 2nd March says :-
"Bois Grenier -2/3/16- LT I D CLAUGHTON and 1 OR killed at morning "stand to", 1 OR wounded.Snipers hit 3 Germans and silenced several loopholes, otherwise quiet day"
