PAWSEY, James Arthur

No.15333, Lance Corporal, James Arthur PAWSEY
Aged 23

9th Battalion, Suffolk Regiment
Died of his Wounds on Monday, 14th February 1916

James Arthur Pawsey was born in 1892 (Thingoe Q4-1892 4A:691) baptised in Fornham St Martin on 23rd October 1892, son of Frederick and Rebecca Susan PAWSEY (née READ). His mother was born in Lingwood 1859.

His mother died in 1895 and father married Georgina JACOBS, in 1898

1901 census...Aged 9, he was at Rectory Cottages, Fornham St.Martin with his father Frederick PAWSEY [39] domestic groom/gardener born Fornham St Martin; step-mother Georgina [27] born Tuddenham; brothers William [17] (maltster's labourer), Edwin (or Edmund)[15] (groom) and Frederick [11]; sister Ethel [13]; half sister Olive [2] and half brother Walter [1]. All the children are recorded as born in Fornham St Martin. There was another sister Annie E born 1882 in Bury St Edmunds.

1911 census...Aged 18, a gardener, he was at Rectory Cottages, Fornham St Martin with his father and step-mother (father now recorded born in Gt Barton as in earlier census); brother William (labourer); half sisters Olive and Violet [9]; half brothers Alfred [7] and Bertie [8 months]. The new siblings all born in Fornham St Martin.

There is some confusion as "Soldiers Died have him born in Mendlesham, enlisting in Eye.

He enlisted in Eye (according to "Soldiers Died")

He died at No.16 Advanced Dressing Station. The war diary is not much help, the battalion had been in Poperinghe at rest and when returning to the trenches on the 13th omits to say where. They did have one killed on 13th and 3 wounded on 14th, nil on 15th and 3 wounded on 16th.

After the regimental aid posts, advanced dressing stations were the most forward of the army's medical facilities and in the Salient some of these operated in vulnerable positions, just behind the lines, for long periods. Generally manned by the Field Ambulances, the next stop for the casualty was either a quick patch up and back to the line, or prepared for onward transport to a Casualty Clearing Station.

James Pawsey is buried in Brandhoek Military Cemetery, grave 1:H:5
