No.8840, Lance Corporal,Ernest ANDREWS
Aged 28

3rd Battalion, Worcestershire Regiment
serving with 3 Division Cyclist Company
Killed in Action on Friday, 13th November 1914

An Old Contemptible

Ernest ANDREWS was born in Helions Bumpstead on 21st November 1885 (Risbridge Q4-1885 4A:607) son of Eliza ANDREWS. Eliza had at least 7 children but so far a marriage nor their father has not been found. Her eldest two (Martha and Walter), were with her, still single, living with her parents James (farm labourer) and Anne ANDREWS (shirt maker) in 1881 at Pale Green.

1891 census...Aged 5, he was at Helion Bumpstead Road, Helions Bumpstead with his mother Eliza (recorded as single), a tailoress; his brothers Walter [14] farm labourer and Harry [3]; sisters Mary [9], Dorothy [2] and Rose [6 months]. All recorded as born in Helions Bumpstead. His eldest sister Martha was working in service in London, something Eliza herself may have done as Martha was born in Edmonton

1901 census... Aged 15, a tailor (jacket parting) he was a boarder at 10 Croft Row, Haverhill where his mother was housekeeper for Harry JOBSON [51] a carter, born Haverhill. Also there were his sisters, Mary (now recorded as born Kedington), Dorothy, Rose and Emily [6] born Haverhill; brothers Harry (coachman's assistant) and Willie [9] born Haverhill. Also Harry Jobson's children, all born in Haverhill, Amelia [25], Kate [23], Elizabeth [17] and Charlie [13]. Harry JOBSON's wife, Esther, had died in 1891.

In 1909 his mother married Charles Henry(Harry) JOBSON.

1911 census... He was serving in India as a lance corporal in the Worcestershire Regiment, from his Army number it appears he would have enlisted in the Army sometime in 1904. In the census Harry and Eliza JOBSON were at 11 Croft Row, Haverhill with Harry's son Charles JOBSON, Eliza's son William, daughters Dorothy and Emily and grand daughter Phyllis [1} whose parentage is unknown.

The pension card gives his dependant as illegitimate Maud Govier, of 3 Frith's Buildings, High Street, Eltham SE.

There is apparently no close family link between Ernest and the next man, Reginald ANDREWS

He enlisted in Haverhill. His legatees were mother Eliza and Charles Harry JOBSON.(step-father)

His battalion had moved to India from Malta in 1908, returning to UK in 1912. Ernest returned to Haverhill where he was well known as a boxer. At the outbreak of hostilities he was mobilised and arrived in France on 11th August 1914. Arriving in Ciply early on 23rd August, near Mons, he survived the Battle of Mons and the retreat. At the time of his death his battalion were in the Hooge area, east of Ypres, but Ernest was actually with the 3rd Division Cyclist Company and their exact whereabouts has not been found.

Eliza was given the sad news of his death by friends in December, but nothing official came until January. The family successfully claimed for the clasp to his 1914 Star, the pre-requisite to officially becoming recognised as an Old Contemptible.

The South West Suffolk Echo of 5th December 1914 had reported that:-
"A friend of Lance Corporal A.E.Andrews (8840) 3rd Division Cycle Coy., has received a letter from a Sergt-Major to say he was killed on the 13th November whilst he was in the trenches. His parents who live at 11 Croft Row, have not received any official information from the War Office."

and on 30th January 1915:-
" The parents of Lance Corporal E.Andrews, residing at 11 Croft Row, have received the following letter from the War Office:- Madam, In reply to yours of the 4th January 1915, I am commanded by the Army Council to inform you that No.8840 Lance Corporal E.Andrews of the Worcestershire Regiment has been reported in a casualty list which has now reached this office as being killed in action on the 13th November 1914. I am to express the sympathy of the Army Council with the soldier's relatives.
Every endeavour is being made with a view to the early collection of personal effects of the deceased and of the amount due to the estate, by some delay must necessarily occur"
