George William BARBER was born in Haverhill (Risbridge Q4-1918 4A:1190), son of George Isaac and Edith E BARBER (née SUCKLING)
His mother had previously been married in 1903 to Charles GAULT, he died in 1904 and she married George Isaac BARBER in 1911.
There was at least a sister Connie and a brother Roy.
In the 1939 register his father George [26-9-1887] a Post Office engineer and mother Edith [15-4-1884] were at 54 Crowland Road, Haverhill. There are no closed records.

George was a member of the 1st Haverhill Scouts. Before the war he worked at Chauntry Mills.





George William was in the Royal Army Medical Corps, 5th Light Field Ambulance. The RAMC is a specialist corps which provides medical services. This is not a fighting force and under the Geneva Conventions, members of the RAMC may only use their weapons for self-defence.

The 8th Army had just relieved the siege of Tobruk (9th December) and were preparing to attack the Gazala Line. He was originally buried at El Cuasc, some 30 miles due south of Tobruk (Libya) and moved in 1943 to Halfaya-Sollum, on the coast, just inside Egypt.
