Albert Gladstone CLAYDON was born in Haverhill (Risbridge Q2-1886 4A:635), son of Charles and Eliza CLAYDON (née PAGE ).


1891 census...Aged 5, he was at Eden Road, Haverhill with his father Charles CLAYDON [34] a warper; his mother Eliza [35]; brother Charles [15] a winder;sisters Ada Emily [10] and Grace [9]. All were born in Haverhill

1901 census...Aged 15, a cycle maker, he was at 124 Withersfield Road, Haverhill with his parents (father now store keeper at factory); sisters Ada E (hair weaver) and Grace (trousers machinist).

1911 census...Aged 25, a cycle mechanic, he was at 49 High Street, Haverhill with his parents (father now cycle agent; sister Grace (fsctory hand).

In 1913 he married Ethel Clara PASK [14-10-1886]. She was later at Maltings Cottages, Sturmer. The pension card has her at 49 High Street, hHaverhill.


He was an Aerial Gunner. 35 Squadron (XXXV Madras Presidency) Squadron [ badge awarded in 1936 -Uno animo agimus - We act with one accord] was formed at Thetford in 1916 as a reconnaissance squadron with FK 8s and continued through several disbandings and re-establishment until 1982 (with Avro Vulcan). By 1918 after the formation of the Royal Air Force on 1st April, they were equiped with Bristol Fighters

The South West Suffolk Echo of 16th November 1918 reported:-
Death of Air Mechanic A.Claydon - The epidemic was responsible for another sad death during the weekend. The victim this time was 1st Air Mechanic Albert Claydon, of the R.F.C [sic], who was 33 years of age. He joined up some twenty months ago, and for the past twelve months had served in France, where he had experienced a number of very narrow escapes. On Sunday week he arrived home for fourteen days leave. Almost immediately he showed signs of illness and took to bed from, which he never rose again, death occurring abut three o'clock on Sunday afternoon. Deceased was well known in the town and neighbourhood, as prior to joining up he was his father's chief assistant on the carrying on of an extensive cycle business. He leaves a widow."
