Arthur Russell FARRANT was born in Haverhill on 5th October 1877 at Crown Passage, Haverhill (Risbridge Q4-1877 4A:475),
son of Catherine (Kate) FARRANT.
1881 census...Aged 3, he was at Union Square, Haverhill with his grandparents, John TARRANT [69] silk weaver and Amelia [64]; uncle Christopher [27] (shepherd); his mother Kate [21] silk weaver; sister Grace [1]. All born in Haverhill. His mother married Samuel FARRANT in Q4-1881. He was baptised on 1st April 1888 in St Mary's, Haverhill, as son of Samuel and Catherine FARRANT. This is where his date/place of birth are recorded 1891 census...Aged 13, an errand boy, he was at 2 Union Square, Haverhill with his father, sisters Grace and Ruby [1]; brothers Barry [6] and Cyril [3]. All born in Haverhill. His mother was a patient in Addenbrookes Hospital, Cambridge and died later that year. 1901 census... Aged 23, he was in the Suffolk regiment in South Africa. His father (still recorded as married), was at Union Square still with Arthur's brothers Barry (clothes presser) and Cyril; sister Ruby In Q1-1902 he married Rose Emma TURNER 1911 census...Aged 33, a weaver he was at 60 Burton End, Haverhill with his wife Rose Emma [32] a weaver, born Haverhill; daughter Grace Lily [6] born Haverhill; sister in law Lilly Mariah RADFORD [married} born Haverhill and her daughters Constance Lillian [6] and Doris Alice [5] both born in Tottenham. His father (silk weaver), now recorded as widower, was at 26 Mill Road, Haverhill with daughter Ruby (cotton weaver). His father died in 1917. |

His first spell in the Army was when he enlisted in Bury St Edmunds on 15th January 1900, giving his age as 22 years 2 months, height 5 feet
4 inches (162.6 cm), weight 115 lbs (52.3 kg), chest 33" to 34.5" (83.8 to 87.6 cm), brown hair, blue eyes, Church of England, he named as next of kin his father Samuel at Union
Square, Haverhill Almost immediately (10th February 1900) he went to South Africa where he qualified for the South African medal 1899-1900 and clasp for South Africa 1901. He was discharged, service no longer required, on his return to UK on 4th May 1901. In the Great war he enlisted in Haverhill. One of his regimental numbers is confusing as it would seem that no.87 would have been issued in 1908 in the 5th Battalion. That does not seem likely as he was married, and also would then have been a reservist and mobilised in 1914. He died of illness in St John's Wood, N.W. London. He had served abroad first in Gallipoli in 1915. At present it is not known what illness he suffered from. |
