on 10th September 1899, son of Arthur and Mary Elizabeth MORLEY (née HALL). 1901 census...Aged 1, he was at 10 Withersfield Road, Haverhill with his father Arthur MORLEY [32] journeyman baker born Great Wratting; his mother Mary E [32] born Ramsgate, Kent; brother Frederick A.L. [6] born Haverhill and a boarder (grandfather ?)William MORLEY [75] retired coachman born Great Wratting. 1911 census...Aged 11, he was still at 10 Withersfield Road with his parents, brothers Frederick (journeyman baker) and Sydney [7] born Haverhill. |

He enlisted in Haverhill. The Battalion was in the area of Mont Bernanchon, NW of Bethune. The war diary has:- "Front line - 29th - Our artillery shelled enemy back areas and communications from midnight to 3 am and put a barrage on first system from 2:45 am to 3 am. No retaliation whatever. Wiring and digging still being carried out but front line is still not yet dug continuous. Full moon makes these operations somewhat difficult. Casualties 2/Lt LAF SMEE wounded, 1 OR killed 2 OR to F.A." CWGC actually have 2 of the battalion dying that day. |
