NUNN, Harry

No.1484, Private, Harry NUNN
Aged 19

5th Battalion, Suffolk Regiment
Killed in Action on Saturday, 21st August 1915

Harry NUNN was born at 9 Rookford Hall, Haverhill on 25th November 1896 (Risbridge Q4-1896 4A:759), baptised in St Mary's Haverhill on 11th July 1897, son of George and Eliza NUNN (née POOLE)

1901 census...Aged 4, he was at 13 Union Square, Haverhill with his father George NUNN [33] silk weaver, born Sturmer; his mother Eliza [34] born London; brother John [14] under boots; sisters Beatrice [11],Ellen [9], Winifred [6] and Alice [1]. All the children were born in Haverhill

1911 census...Aged 14, a silk weaver, he was at 92 Burton End, Haverhill with his parents (mother a laundress); brothers John (POOLE) NUNN (groom), George [6] and Charles [3] both born in Haverhill; sisters Ellen Ivy [19], Winifred and Alice. Harry, Winifred and Alice now recorded as born in Hamlet, Essex.

He attested in Haverhill, his number suggests early in 1912.
According to Lt Col. Murphy's "History of the Suffolk Regiment" .the Battalion from 18th to 27th August were in local reserve trenches, working hard and constantly harassed by snipers and shrapnel.
CWGC records show however that on the 21st they had 53 die, only one with a known grave. However no roll call had been taken for some days and it is firmly believed that many of these 53 had in fact died in a fierce action on the 12th. Harry's "Soldier's Personal Effects" entry actually states death "presumed on or since 21st August 1915". Obviously it is often impossible to accurately date such events.

He was in the same unit and died the same day as Harry Orbell see here

Harry Nunn is commemorated on the Helles Memorial, Turkey panels 46 and 47
