Albert SHIPP was born in Haverhill (Risbridge Q2-1891 4A:724), son of Mark and Alice SHIPP (née JOBSON). His age is seldom as his birth registration records, but this certainly appears to be the correct Albert. The birth certificate of either of the Albert Shipp would be useful.

1891 census...His newly married parents were living at 26 Upper Puddlebrook, Haverhill with his mother's parents.

1901 census...Aged 10, he was at 116 Burton End, Haverhill with his father Mark SHIPP [37] farm labourer; his mother Alice [36]; brothers Sidney [7], Ernest [4] and Edward [3]. All were born in Haverhill.

1911 census...Aged 19, a farm labourer, he was now at 128 Burton End, Haverhill with his parents; sister Lydia [18] (charring) and Annie [7]; brothers Ernest (farm labourer), Edward, Henry [8] and William [3]. The new siblings also born in Haverhill.



He enlisted on 27th January 1913 in the Suffolk Regiment, No.1694. Transferred on 1st May 1915 to the Army Cyclists Corps and posted to the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force on 29th July 1917, arriving in Alexandria on 9th August and Mudros on 11th. He served in Gallipoli from then until December 1915. From there he served in Egypt , at first attached to A.C. HQ signals Coy, Royal Engineers , beginning to suffer ill health from 1916. Attacks of malaria followed by pleurisy. His discharge records show several admissions to various hospitals in Cairo and Alexandria until he was diagnosed with TB in Alexandria No.19 General Hospital on 6th June 1918 and on 25th embarked at Alexandria aboard HMHS Kalyan. At Hounslow on 20th September 1918 he was discharged as no longer fit for war service. He was then recorded as being 26 years 4 months old, 5 feet 9 inches (175.3 cm)tall, chest 32.5" to 34.5"(82.6 to 87.6 cm), with brown eyes and hair. His civilian occupation was put as farm labourer, prior to enlistment with H.P.Cross, Hazel Stubb Farm, Haverhill. His intended address on discharge was Burton End, Haverhill. Only his discharge papers have been found. He was awarded a silver war badge #B.11218.
