Clifford George SIZER was born in Haverhill, (Risbridge Q3-1897 4A:763), son of Joseph and Emily SIZER(née TREE or FREE).

1901 census...Aged 3, he was at 8 Burton End, Haverhill with his father Joseph Sizer [29] tailor's presser; his mother Emily [30] born Horseheath; brother Herbert [9] and sister Edith [7]. All except his mother were born in Haverhill.

His father died in 1902

1911 census... Aged 13 a grocer's errand boy, he was at 8 Shepherds Cottages, Haverhill with his widowed mother; brother Herbert (miller) and sister Edith (sewing machinist). Also a boarder, Emma COOK [31] sewing machinist born Haverhill.



The South West Suffolk Echo on 24th March 1917 said:-
"Official information is also to hand that another Haverhill soldier has been killed in action viz., Pte.Clifford Sizer, of the Essex Regt., whose mother resides in Vine Cottages. The deceased soldier was only 19 years of age and had been at the front for about four months. Before enlisting he was employed by the Co-operative Society as a milkman and warehouseman. "


He enlisted in Haverhill.
The 13th Essex war diary has them in the left sub sector at Courcelette and "A" Coy returning from the line to COURCELETTE DUG-OUTSs. "D" Coy relieved by 17th Middlesex and returning to W MIRAUMONT DUG-OUTS.
In the period 16th to 23rd February they had 2 officers and 12 OR killed, 1 OR died of wounds and 31 OR wounded. CWGC has only 2 killed on 22nd, neither has a known grave.



Clifford Sizer is commemorated on the Thiepval memorial, pier/face 10D
and in the Methodist Chapel, Haverhill
