Sidney Rogers was born in Great Cornard, Sudbury in 1894, (Sudbury Q4-1894 4A:742), son of Ephraim John and Betsy ROGERS (née PALFREY ).
1901 census...Aged 6, at Upper Tye, Great Cornard with his father John RODGERS [38] horse keeper born Pakenham; his mother Betsy [45] born Honington; sisters Minnie [11], Dorothy [9] and Ethel [4]; brother Harry [1]. All the children were born in Great Cornard. 1911 census...Aged 16, a farm labourer, he was at Malting Row, Honington with his parents John and Betsy, sister Ethel and brother Harry. There is as yet no connection made with Troston, but it seems likely he is the Sidney ROGERS named on the Trostopn war memorial as well as killed on the Roll of Honour in All Saints Church, Honington. The entry for the inscription on his headstone is from H.Rogers, presumably brother Harry. The Army seem to refer to his father as Ephraim and mother as Elizabeth. He enlisted in Honington. The 8th East Surreys were in the area of the Maricourt-Montauban road and their war diary has:- "A quiet morning. Between 3 pm and 5:30 pm in the afternoon the Germans fired about 100 shells and trench mortar bombs of all calibres between Machine Gun Wood on the left of this sector. In view of what happened afterwards these were probably ranging shots. At 11:30 pm an intense bombardment of our front line trenches started embracing the whole of AI and continuing to the right. They did not bombard on the left of us. Our artillery almost immediately opened a very heavy and effective barrage." CWGC records show 12 killed, all buried in Carnoy .
