No.SD/3022, Private, George SHORE
Aged 24
George Shore was born in Linton (Linton Q3-1892 3B:597), son of Walter and Mary Ann SHORE (née CHAPMAN).
1901 census...Aged 7, he was at Rivey Hill, Linton with his father Walter SHORE [41] gamekeeper; his mother Mary A [40] born Fen Drayton; brothers Harry [10], George [8] and Arthur [4]; sister Ethel [5]. All except his mother were born in Linton. 1911 census...Aged 17, a domestic gardener, he was at Horseheath Lodge with his parents (mother now recorded as born in Linton); brothers Harry Herbert (gamekeeper), and Arthur and sister Ethel. The family later moved to the Hall, Six Mile Bottom. His younger brother Arthur was killed in action serving in France in 1918 with the Suffolk Regiment see here |
He enlisted in Hastings.
Merville where he is buried was a billeting and hospital centre. With no service record it is not possible to say exactly where or when he was wounded. The battalion had been in battle at Richebourg on the 30th June and three battalions of the Royal Sussex suffered a total of over 1,000 casualties and it is possible that this was where George was wounded.
