George Cuthbert was born on 9th October 1898 in Hundon (Risbridge Q4-1898 4A:779), son of Robert Walter and Harriet CUTHBERT (née MORTLOCK).
He was admitted to Hundon Board School in March 1903, leaving 6th October having obtained is certificate. 1901 census...Aged 2, he was at The Bridge, Hundon with his father Robert Walter CUTHBERT [26], farm labourer; his mother Harriet [26] and brother Fred [4 months]. All born in Hundon. 1911 census...Aged 12, he was at Brickwalls, Hundon with his parents (father now horsekeeper); brothers Fred, Walter [6] and Arthur [4]; sister Daisy [5 months]. All born in Hundon. This is the only George Cuthbert found with a connection to Hundon. CWGC however have his parents as Mr & Mrs W.H. Cuthbert of the Plough Inn, Hundon. The soldier detailed here had as father Robert W.according to the Register of Soldiers Effects |

He enlisted in Sudbury.
From the war diary:- Assembling SW of Gonnelieu: Zero hour 6:20. the battalion in conjunction with tanks and supported by a creeping barrage attacked the BROWN LINE including the highly important positions of LATEAU WOOD and LE QUENNET FARM. The enemy were taken completely by surprise and appeared utterly demoralised. Many prisoners, a battery of 5.9" mortars and a machine gun were taken by the battalion in its successful advance. All objectives were captured in accordance with plan and timetable and the work of consolidation commenced at once. This was continued through the night.......killed in action 5 officers and 8 ORs, wounded 3 officers 45 ORs, missing 7 ORs.
