George Thomas Mansfield was born in 1918 (Sudbury Q2-1918 4A:1292), son of George and Amelia R. MANSFIELD (née RICHARDSON).

His widower father George [21/2/1888], a farmer and coal merchant, was at the bakery, High Street, High Street in September 1939 with Thomas MANSFIELD [9/1/1893] (1 closed record). His mother had died in 1932




The 5th Queen's Own were part of the 131st (Queen's) Infantry Brigade, fighting in North Africa with the 8th Army at El Alamein. On 13th May the 5th took part in the successful assault on the village of Pignataro and then went on in the attack on Piedimonte.

George, identified by his discs, was moved from his original burial place (as yet not identified) to Cassino War Cemetery on 23rd March 1945.
