Arthur Wallis was born in Little Thurlow (Risbridge Q1-1883 4A:593), son of George and Ellen WALLIS (née COPPIN).
1891 census...Aged 8, he was at The Green, Little Thurlow with his father George WALLIS [33] farm labourer; his mother Ellen [29] born Cowlinge; sisters Jane [9] and Emily [4]; brothers William [6] and Frederick [2]. All except his mother were born in Little Thurlow 1901 census...Aged 18, a farm labourer, he was still at The Green, Little Thurlow with his father (recorded as married); brothers William (farm labourer), Frederick and John [5]; sisters Emily, Ellen [8] and Jessie [3]. The new siblings were born in Little Thurlow. His mother at this census was ???? On 19th December 1908 he married Annie Jane MAYES in Kedington and they moved to Rayleigh in Essex. His sister Emily WALLIS married Thomas WIMPRESS in 1907 see here 1911 census...Aged 28, married, a gardener, he was alone at Doctor's Close, Impington. His wife Annie [25] born Debden, was with her mother Elizabeth MAYES [55] who was a charwoman for the MITCHELL family at "Minshurst" Cavendish Avenue, Cambridge. His widower father was still at Little Thurlow with brothers Frederick and John( both farm labourers) and sisters Elizabeth and Jessie. Mother died ????? He enlisted in the Militia (# 5426 3rd Suffolks) on 16th April 1901 . He was working for Joseph Mitchell in Little Bradley. Discharged to join the regular Army on 2nd May 1901 and specifically asked for the so as to be with his brother. Requesting that he served in the Royal Field Artillery in order to serve with his brother, he attested 3rd May 1901 in Bury St Edmunds, having served in the 3rd Suffolks (Militia) and assigned as #15827 to the Royal Field Artillery. He gave his age as 18 years 3 months. He was 5 feet 5.25 inches (165.7 cm) tall, weighed 126 lbs 57.3 kg), chest 34" to 36" (86.4 to 91.4 cm), blue eyes, brown hair, Church of England. Born in Little Thurlow, single, a labourer, his next of kin, father, George WALLIS, Little Thurlow. He joined the RFA at the Depot at Weedon on 3rd May 1901. On 16th March 1904 he extended his service to 8 years in the colours, completing that term on 3rd May 1909, discharged to the Reserves until 2 May 1913. On 17th November 1915 he re-enlisted at Southend in the Royal Field Artillery and was placed on Reserve, giving his age as 32 years 10 months, married, a chauffeur from Langley Cottages, Rayleigh, Essex. Married on December 19th 1908 at Kedington to Annie Jane MAYES. Address later # 3 Dull Matins, Rayleigh., 5 feet 8 inches tall, chest 33" to 36". Mobilised at Grove Park on 11th April 1916, he was transferred to 650 M.T.Coy., Army Service Corps (M.T.) # 167823 on 16th May 1916. Serving in UK from 9th April 1916 to 21st August 1917. Appointed Acting Lance Corporal on 17th May 1917, he was posted to the BEF going via Portsmouth-Le Havre 22nd/23rd August. he was attached to "H" Battalion, Tank Corps and then posted to 5 Tank Brigade, M.T.Coy., on 5th April 1918. Diagnosed with Myeloid Leukemia at No 6 General Hospital [Rouen] he was evacuated via AT "Essquibo" on 4th November 1918 to Military Hospital, Shoeburyness where he died from chronic Bright's disease and cardiac failure at 2:10 pm on 24th April 1919. He was discharged from the Army Service Corps on 13th December 1918 as longer being physically fit for war service. On the Living relatives form the widow on 17th April 1920 gave her address as "Locarno", Rayleigh Road, Thundersley, and his father as George Wallis of Green's Farm, Little Thurlow and she could not say whether there were any other living blood relatives alive. Sadly many of the papers are too badly damaged to read. The notice (29/4/1919) of transferring his body to Rayleigh for burial gives his widow's address as Castle Road, but it is then badly burnt.
