Maurice Sidney Osborne was born in 1884 (3rd qtr 1884 Lexden 4a:504), son of Richard and Elizabeth Ellen OSBORNE(née ROGERS). Baptised in St.Andrews, Abberton, Essex

1891 census...Aged 6, he was at Peldon Road, Abberton, Essex with his father Richard OSBORNE [31] servant born Peldon; his mother Elizabeth [28]; sisters Grace [4] and Jessie [1]. All except his father were born in Abberton.

1901 census...Aged 16, he was at Bully Green Farm Cottages with his stepfather G.CLARKE [30] horsekeeper born Layer de la Haye; his mother; (all the children are recorded as CLARKE) sister Jessie; brother Arthur; half brothers Adolphus [3] born Abberton and William [1] born Bradfield St Clare. His father had died in 1895 and mother married George CLARKE in 1897 in Abberton.

1911 census...Aged 26, a horsekeeper, he was at Elms Cottage Depden with his stepfather George CLARK [40] horsekeeper born Layer de la Haye; his mother; half brothers Adolphus [13] born Abberton and William [11] born Bradfield St Clare, half sisters Nellie born Hawstead and Elsie [4] born Depden; brother Arthur [16] born Abberton.

On the pension card his mother (Elizabeth CLARKE) was at Ivy Cottage, The Park, Brandon.

His name on the memorial seems to rely on his membership of the cricket team as no other documentation links him with Nowton


He enlisted in Bury St.Edmunds
2nd November 1917 was the start of the 3rd battle for Gaza. Starting at 3 am they advanced rapidly and took the Turkish 1st, 2nd and 3rd lines before opposition became more stubborn and they pulled back to the 2nd line and consolidated.
