John Thomas Clipson was born in 1912 in Abbots Ripton, Huntingdon (Huntingdon Q3-1912 3B:431), son of William Webster and Sarah Jane CLIPSON (née WHITE) when he had two brothers,
Isaac William born Upton, Hunts 1908 and Frank born Abbots Ripton 1909 and sister Hilda born Abbots Ripton 1910.
In the 1939 register, at 7 Avenue Cottages, Risby were his father William W [25-2-1878], stockman; his mother Sraha J [2-12-1889]; brothers Isaac W [20-4-1907] factory hand at sugar factory, Henry A [18-10-1918] farm carter. Also Edward K [25-1-1924] farm carter; sisters Mary A [18-11-1926] later ARBON and Margaret I [2-5-1932] later STONE, then DOUGAN. There is one closed record. William Probate gave their address in 1945 as 7 Avenue Cottages, Risby. |

His grave, together with several others, was concentrated into Overloon War Cemetery on 19th May 1947. Overloon is just west of the Meuse River, SW of Goch. The area was the scene of some fierce fighting in October/November 1944 as the Allies prepared to cross the Rhine. The 1st Suffolks, having been delayed 24 hours by bad weather, left Rijkevoort at 0730 and after aircraft had attacked targets between Overloon and Venray, they slowly moved forward. Despite small arms fire and sniping they reached their objectives by 1730, with the loss of 12 men killed. photo: elizabeth orbell
